Chronic Pain & Illness Therapy in Fort Collins, CO
When Your Health Affects More Than Your Body
Living with chronic pain or illness can be exhausting, and not just physically. Between managing symptoms, navigating medical appointments, and dealing with the uncertainty of your health, it can take a toll on your mental health, relationships, and everyday life. You might feel frustrated, anxious, disconnected from your body, or simply tired of explaining what you're going through to people who don't quite understand.
At Old Town Counseling, I specialize in working with people navigating chronic pain and illness, including endometriosis, POTS, EDS, chronic migraines, and other ongoing health conditions. My approach focuses on helping you process the emotional impact of chronic illness, work through difficult experiences with healthcare, and find ways to improve your quality of life without minimizing the physical realities of what you're experiencing.
Therapy for Chronic Pain & Illness
Chronic health conditions can look very different from person to person, but many of the challenges that come with them are similar. I work with individuals navigating conditions such as POTS, EDS, chronic migraines, endometriosis, and persistent pain, as well as those who are still searching for answers about their health.
Therapy isn't about convincing you to think positively or simply accept everything you're going through. It's about having a place to process the frustration, uncertainty, grief, and changes that can come with chronic illness, while developing tools to manage stress, navigate relationships, and feel more connected to your life outside of your symptoms.
My Approach to Chronic Pain & Illness
There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to living with chronic pain or illness, and I don't believe therapy should be one-size-fits-all either. I draw from approaches like Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), depending on your experiences and what you're hoping to work on.
For some people, therapy focuses on managing anxiety, processing medical trauma, or adjusting to life with a chronic condition. For others, we may explore the relationship between the nervous system, stress, and persistent pain. My goal isn't to convince you that your symptoms are psychological or that you just need to change your mindset. It's to help you better understand what you're experiencing and find approaches that actually feel useful in your everyday life.
Endometriosis & Medical Trauma
Endometriosis and other chronic health conditions can come with experiences that go far beyond managing physical symptoms. For many people, that includes years of searching for answers, feeling dismissed by medical providers, navigating difficult treatment decisions, or grieving how their health has changed their life.
Endometriosis is an area I'm particularly passionate about, both personally and professionally. I understand how complicated it can be to navigate chronic pain, surgeries, hormonal changes, and the emotional toll of living with a condition that isn't always well understood. My work also includes helping clients process medical trauma, rebuild trust in themselves, and navigate the uncertainty that often comes with chronic health conditions.
Finding a therapist who understands chronic pain and illness can make a real difference. If you're considering therapy but aren't sure if we'd be a good fit, I'd love to connect. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation where we can talk about what you're looking for, answer any questions, and see if working together feels right.
